NUUN Energy Drink Review

by on Sep.15, 2011, under News, Personal

During a recent stop at Mountain Equipment Coop here in Ottawa I was looking for some of my usual Gatorade for the trail when I stumbled across an innovative new energy drink. Nuun is a small tablet that quickly dissolves in water to give a slight flavour and a dose of electrolytes to help your body perform better during physical activity.

Nunn drink tabs

Each tab has zero sugar and adds a paltry 8 calories to you drink. The flavours range from a subtle tea flavour (with added caffeine) through a slight lime flavour to light berry melody. None of the tabs have overwhelming flavour but add just enough to make you want to drink more than you would if you were drinking just plain water.

At approximatly the size of a few quarters stacked up the tiny tablets are extremely light and much easier to add to your drink than traditional powdered drink mixes. Also due to the lack of tonnes of added sugar the 12 tab tube is extremely small and light to keep you pack weight down when camping. These have quickly become the drink of choice when hiking or when rehydrating after a long bike ride.

The Jane Hotel

by on May.18, 2011, under Personal

We are staying at the Jane hotel on Jane st while we are here in New York. Jane fell in love with the name and we just HAD to stay here. Turns out it’s one of the neatest hotels I’ve ever been to.

The Jane Hotel

The hotel was built in 1908 as a place for sailors to stay while their ships were at dock at a nearby pier. There are multiple different rooms some with bunks and some with single beds originally separated for sailors of different rank. It also has multiple common rooms for those same group of sailors but they have now been converted to different uses such as a restaurant.

In 1913 survivors of the Titantic stayed here while a official investigation took place.

In 1944 it was bought by the YMCA and was eventually completely restored on it’s centennial in 2008.
